Kindergarten and Pre Primary (K-P)
Derby District High School offer programs for 4 and 5 year old children at both our Mowanjum campus and the Bundja Wulan Nunga site at DDHS.
Admission requirements are as follows:

Kindergarten
Students must be born between 1 July 2013 and 30 June 2014.
Pre-Primary
Students must be born between 1July 2012 and 30 June 2013. Inclusion in the Kindy program is dependent on enrolment numbers. Enrolment in Kindergarten, although strongly encouraged, is not compulsory. Pre Primary enrolment is compulsory. Students in Kindergarten attend school for 3 full days a week from Monday to Wednesday 8.00am until 2.00pm with a minimum of 15 hours of instruction per week. Pre-primary students attend 5 full days.

Attendance is vital in these early years and equal focus is given to both formal and informal learning to build strong foundations for the future. All centres provide a nurturing atmosphere to support our students as they enter the schooling process and strong relationships between home and school are maintained.

Years 1–6
The Primary section of Derby District High School is a vibrant and creative part of the school. We continue to have high expectations of our students to achieve as we provide engaging
teaching and learning programs. Extensive data and base line information is gathered throughout the year so teachers can pinpoint areas of need and gauge the progress of each student.
New enrolments to the school are required to sit an On Entry Assessment to establish where the student is academically.

Derby District High School prides itself on offering a variety of Specialist Subjects to classes including Music, Physical Education, Science and Health. These subjects, as well as a variety of extra-curricular experiences such as Swimming and Athletics Carnivals, Year 4 and 6 Camp, football and netball games plus reward excursions, give our students a complete learning experience to allow them to reach their full potential. We are fully equipped with English and Mathematics resources which cater for our students’ various learning styles including a targeted teaching and cooperative learning. The Shooting Stars netball academy is an important part of the Primary School and is open to all girls from Years 3–6.
Aboriginal boys in Years 5 and 6 are also welcome to join in the Primary Clontarf Academy.

The Primary School embraces the cultural diversity of its students and every support is given to the school’s pupils. Education Assistants, Youth Education Officer (YEO), School
Based Attendance Officer (SBAO) and Aboriginal and Islander Education Officers (AIEO’s) are valuable members of our workforce in the Primary School and who along with the teachers bring a vast range of skills and expertise to help support our students in all aspects of their school life.

SECONDARY SCHOOL

Middle School – Years 7, 8 and 9
Our philosophy in the Middle School at Derby District High School is to build a safe, inclusive learning environment where every student wants to attend school every day, where every student develops positive, high expectations relationships with the staff they work with and where every student has access to the resources, facilities and opportunities that they require to become the best version of themselves.

Our students get the opportunity to take part in subjects such as Music, Media, Visual Arts, Home Economics, Woodwork, Metalwork, Information Technology and Elite Sports  providing opportunities to improve their skills and excel in a variety of areas.

We are lucky at Derby District High School to be further supported by the Clontarf Academy, Girls Academy and Follow the Dream. Each of these partnerships and arrangements are in place to support our students to further engage in school and provide meaningful, engaging and educative opportunities for our students as well as improving our pastoral care provisions.

Senior Secondary – Years 10–12
As your child enters Senior Secondary in 2018 at Derby District High School they will have the opportunity to select a school pathway that best suits their needs. There are 3 distinct pathways available to your Senior Secondary child in 2018; An ATAR (University) Pathway, A Vocational (VOC) Pathway, and an Enterprise (modified) Pathway.

ATAR Pathway (University) – Year 11 & 12
If your child selects an ATAR pathway, they will be enrolled in a minimum of 4 ATAR subjects, and receive an ATAR ‘score’. This score determines future eligibility for individual University degrees, so it is important your child dedicates themselves to achieving the best results possible. At DDHS we deliver (student numbers dependent) ATAR Mathematics. Your child may then enrol in and select their remaining ATAR subjects with in School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE) and will be supported here at school by a SIDE Coordinator. Your child may also: Enrol in a VET Certificate Qualification, Enrol in General Courses Participate in Work Place Learning (ADWPL), Complete a School Based Traineeship / Apprenticeship.

Vocational Pathway (General) – Year 11 & 12
If your child chooses to follow a Vocational (VOC) Pathway, they will select a combination of General Courses and Vocational Education & Training (VET) Certificate Qualifications. To achieve WACE, your child on a VOC Pathway must fully complete a Certificate II Qualification minimum. To allow the greatest opportunity for your child on a VOC pathway to meet the new WACE requirements, they will have 2 days dedicated to Vocational studies, and 3 days dedicated to their General Course studies. Vocational options include: Certificate training through NRT, Certificate training conducted here at DDHS, Certificate training via correspondence, Work Place Learning (ADWPL) School Based Apprenticeship / Traineeship Endorsed Programs (e.g. Keys For Life Driver Training).

Individual Transition Pathway
Here at DDHS we understand that your child may not be suited to a VOC or ATAR Pathway. We will be offering a variety of programs and training qualifications to help develop independence and work readiness within your child. Programs for 2017 may include (numbers dependent):Baroola Rangers Program, Deadly Mungas Health and Wellbeing Program, Visual Arts, Manufacturing Sport & Recreation Certificates and School-Based Work Preparation Programs.

HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL

Citizens of Derby began agitating for a school for their children in 1898, 5 years after the town was gazetted. That initial advance was rejected by Cyril Jackson (Inspector General of Education) who was worried about the enrolment of 19 and attendance of those children. He was also concerned about the costs for the government. It would have cost £650 to build the school and they would have had to pay £150 for the teacher.

Nonetheless they continued in their quest and finally on 19th June 1905 the school was opened with Johnstone Steen as the first headmaster. The first school was built in Hardman Street. Unfortunately this building was destroyed by fire after serving as the Technical Centre and then the Masonic Lodge.

The school had outgrown this site and in 1959 the present site became the Derby Junior High School. Mr Frank Harding the Principal in 1960 remembers the excitement of the “new
school” and collecting the students from Mowanjum on a tractor and trailer.

In 1942 the principal was Margaret Henderson, this was indicative of the times with many men serving their country. The school closed for the year as women and children were
evacuated from the town but reopened in 1943.

Fire continued to be a problem for the school and when the administration building burnt down many records and memorabilia were lost. Long serving Principal Max Clarke
retired at the end of 2004 bringing an end to an era.

The year 2005 was the Centenary year and an opportunity for past and present students, staff and the community to reminisce on what schooling was like then and now and
more importantly what it could look like in the future. In 2013 the school was very fortunate to begin a building program to add a Home Economics facility, Music room, Early Years
Centre, Performing Arts Centre as well as adding a new Science room. These new buildings were completed in 2014 and have been a great resource for the school. The school is
very proud of its grounds and buildings and is honored to be delivering a top education program to students from Derby and surrounding communities for 112 years.
