EMERGENCIES requiring the SES call 132 500

The State Emergency Service (SES) is the Hazard Management Authority for emergency situations such as flood, cyclone, storm damage, tsunami and earthquake. The SES also responds to assist other organisations in general rescue situations such as finding missing persons, forensic search and so on.

The SES Derby Volunteer Unit has members who are trained to respond in these situations within the Derby Police District. The volunteers are available to assist the community in emergencies such as cyclone and storm damage clean up, general rescue, flood threat assistance and so on.

Training for these events includes:

  • Communications – radio voice procedures and use of equipment
  • Search techniques – by air and on land
  • Map reading and navigation
  • General rescue
  • 4WD techniques and recovery
  • Working in an emergency operations centre
  • Flood boat operation

The Unit welcomes interested new members who are dedicated and willing to volunteer their precious time to help the community. Training courses are usually held on weekends and followed up with practice at the Unit. The courses are held at one of the Kimberley DFES/SES units or in the field where practical training is needed. Derby SES also has regular training exercise in the field (out bush) to give members a taste of the “real thing”. Training nights are held every second Monday evening from 6.00pm to 9.00pm at the Unit located on the corner of Derby Highway and Sutherland Streets.

If you are interested in joining the SES and helping your Community in this way please contact the Local Manager on 9191 1501 and remember WE HAVE SERIOUS FUN!!
